Chinese, October 2017

During the month of October, Chinese Level 1 will be focusing on a new unit "Dates & Time" in Lesson 3. Students will start the lesson with learning numbers.

To extend the learning, students will be learning how to tell and speak about time and dates, talk about someone's age and birthday, invite someone to dinner and arrange a dinner date. There will be a vocabulary quiz, an end-of-unit test and a project to introduce a celebrity around the numbers. If time allows, Chinese Level 1 will proceed to the introduction of the next unit "Hobbies." Chinese II -

During the month of October, Chinese Level 2 will be focusing on a new unit "Dining" in Lesson 12. Students will learn how to ask if there are seats available in a restaurant, order Chinese dishes, tell the waiter his/her dietary preferences and restrictions, ask the restaurant to recommend dishes, pay for the meal and get the correct change after the payment, which links to our Lesson 10 unit topic Shopping. There will be a vocabulary quiz and an end-of-unit test.

Students will be working in groups of 3 to create a skit around dining. There will be 2 customers and 1 waiter in a skit. They need to present in the class and show their designed Chinese restaurant menu.

Chinese III - During the month of October, Chinese Level 3 will be focusing on topic travel & at the airport , We will focus on what town or city is the nearest culture or political center, how students normally spend the summer, how to ask for discounts ,compare airfares and routes and book an airplane ticket as well as what do people say to their guests when greeting them at the airport, train or bus station.

Students will be able to talk about their experiences about traveling and how their traveling during the holidays, introduce their hometown to classmates. Students will also discuss about their traveling experiences in Chinese . Group discussion: Advantages and disadvantages of traveling by train or by plane. In the end of the unit we will have a unit test. Chinese IV - During the month of October, Chinese Level 4 will be focusing on topic Life & Health, We will focus on what’s the relationship between diet and healthy life style and the importance of having a balanced diet.

We will also talk about do people go to gym to exercise and the differences between traditional Chinese and Western medicine. Students will be able to extend their learning of Chinese by talking about their eating habit and what is the best way to keep healthy and also to make judgements about the relevance of detail in understanding paragraphs, e.g. extracting ideas and issues referred to the paragraphs. Topics include the food pyramid and special Chinese herbs that are not only popular as medicine but as cooking spice or ingredient to enhance better health. Teacher will show the pictures of ginseng and licorice root.

Assessments :Design a menu for a school canteen and design a flyer for students in school, promoting healthy eating. Listing one’s diet for a week and compare with others. In the end October, we will have a unit test.

Spanish I - During the month of October, students will focus on describing themselves and other people, and talking about what they and others like. Grammatically, students will focus on conjugating all regular verbs in Spanish. There will be a spoken performance at the end of the chapter. The Spanish speaking territory of focus is Puerto Rico and students will explore similarities and differences between Puerto Rico and other countries.

Spanish II - During the month of October, Spanish Level 2 will focus on comparing people, things, and cultural practices. Students will become more involved in Reading and Storytelling activities. Additionally, students will focus on the following grammar points: Stem-changing and Irregular verbs, Use of Comparatives and Superlatives, and the Present Progressive. Students will complete a Summative Project related to Culture and a Summative Performance task related to Presentational Writing in the beginning of November. Spanish III - During the month of October, Spanish Level 3 will focus on the study of Culture. During this short unit, students will explore the 3 P's of culture (Products, Practices, Perspectives).

Additionally, students will focus on the following grammar points: Use of Comparatives and Superlatives, Prepositions of location, and the Present Progressive. Students will complete a Summative Project related to Culture and a Summative Performance task related to Presentational Communication at the end of the month.

Spanish IV - During the month of October, Spanish Level 4 will focus on childhood memories, entertainment and fun, and family traditions. Students will become more involved in Reading and Storytelling activities. Additionally, students will focus on the following grammar points: Past tense Preterite and Imperfect, and Verbs with reciprocal actions. Students will complete a Summative Project related to Culture and a Summative Performance task related to Presentational Writing in early November.
