Students at Korea International School Jeju (KISJ) often suffer from stress due to the heavy amount of homework, tests, and projects. Some students try to enhance their academic achievements and marks while some others search for methods to alleviate their stress. Fortunately, the school supports the student body by allowing them to freely use various facilities after school. Students make most of these facilities for academic, arts, or physical purposes.

These facilities include music practice rooms, gymnasium, library, and student lounge. On week days, the facilities are opened from after school to 10:15p.m. On weekends, the facilities are opened in the afternoon. Each and every facility is available to students as long as they fill in a sign-up form.

Students who use open facilities are largely divided into two types. One type of students are those who seek for music, art, and physical activities. Another type of students are those who want to get some help regarding academics. Students who want to enjoy their time doing physical activities use the weight room, gymnasium, soccer field, and dance room where they can work out for their health and improve their athletic qualities. Students who want artistic activities sign up for music practice rooms where they can practice musical skills. Joel S.(G10), who has been constantly using open facilities such as the gym or the weight room, spoke about his main reasons for signing up for the facilities and whether he finds it satisfying or not. He answered, “I usually sign up because I want to improve my badminton skills.” He added that he is “very satisfied with the open facilities system that the school is providing.” However, he’d find it better if the time for them are extended.

Another student who frequently uses the music practice room answered the questions. Yuji Y.(G10), who participates in various band performances, replied that he “usually go there to practice instruments with my group members or by myself”. He showed satisfaction with the open facilities system, but thought that it would be better if there are some improvements. “I find open facilities very satisfying because it gives me the opportunity to practice with my bandmates, which is very hard to do without a music practice room. However, I think it would be better if the time was extended because other people seem to be dominantly occupying the room.”

On the other hand, students who sign up for facilities such as the student lounge or the library have different purposes. They usually sign up because they need a quiet and calm environment to study. The student lounge also works as a meeting place for those who are doing group work. Joseph S.(G10), who actively signs up for the library, stated that his main purpose of signing up for the library is to “study in a quiet environment where I can easily concentrate on my work.” He said that he is very satisfied with the open facilities system because it gives him the opportunity to “study in suitable places depending on [his] situations.”

Open facilities are providing students the opportunities and environments that they can work on what interests them the most. Most students find them satisfying with almost every students replying positive comments about this system. However, most students also replied that they would like the time to be extended. In general, though, the open facilities system is successfully functioning.
